Marine Engineering Simulation & Modelling

Course work

Semester 1

Academic Year 2025/2026

Subject: Simulation of a marine diesel engine

Use the provided Matlab/Simulink zero-dimensional code to simulate the steady state operation of one cylinder of the MAN Diesel and Turbo 9K90MC engine. The engine MCR point is 41,130 kW at 94 rpm. The model is calibrated at 100% load. The model is described in a publication that can be downloaded by the following link: http://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/8/6/5738

Task 1 (10%)

Use the calibrated model at 100% load to familiarise with the model and submodels (used equations, input parameters, boundary conditions, model constants, etc.).

1. Run the simulation and plot the results using Simulink scope and MATLAB (develop figures in MATLAB where required).

2. Identify critical engine performance parameters (derived by the model).

3. Identify critical input parameters (i.e., change of input parameters leading to considerable output parameters change).

4. Discuss the following: model set up, calibration, convergence, simulation cycles.

Task 2 (25%)

1. Calibrate the model and perform. simulation runs for loads 50%, 75%, and 85%.

2. Compare the derived engine parameters with the respective manufacturer’s data.

3. Provide the in-cylinder pressure diagrams (pressure in bar against crank angle (CA) for the converged cycle).

Task 3 (50%)

For one operating point (according to the student’s name), investigate and discuss the impact of one (according to the student’s name) of the following faults in the engine performance parameters:

a) Retarded/advanced injection timing by ±3oCA with step 1oCA

b) Increased/reduced combustion duration by ±9oCA with step 3oCA

c) Fouled air-cooler causing change of the scavenging receiver temperature by ±15 K with step of 5 K.

d) Fouled turbocharger causing change of the pressure at the scavenging and exhaust receivers by ±0.2 bar considering steps of 0.1 bar.

Task 4 (15%)

Prepare a presentation to briefly describe the most important results and findings from Tasks 1, 2 and 3. Critically discuss the provided results commenting on their usefulness for understanding the engine operation. Comment the implications of your study in the shipping industry.

Use embedded audio in each slide to present your work.

Presentation length: up to 15 slides

Note: Tasks 1&2 results and responses to be provided in the presentation (only the presentation file must be submitted in myplace).
