Group Assignment specification

1.          Purpose

The intention of setting this assignment is for you to obtain the course learning outcomes 1 - 4. The process of attempting the assignment is more valuable than the mark received for the completion of the assignment.

In attempting and completing this assignment correctly, it is intended you will improve your:

•          Data-based problem-solving skills.

•          Ability to design, implement and logically verify a data presentation

•          Ability to apply visual design principles.

•          Demonstrate knowledge of data-based problem-solving skills for business intelligence.

2.          Assignment Questions

In order to start on the assignment first, select ONE dataset from the list HERE.

•    You are free to select the one you feel is most suitable for your group.

•    If you wish to access the original CSV files for your datasets you would need to register for a Kaggle account: https://www.kaggle.com/account/login

Before you start posing questions to the dataset, think of a theme that your project will follow. Examples of themes in the past have been:

•    Picking the ultimate Pokémon team to enter a Pokémon battle.

•    Hosting a blog that discusses music.

•    Research into the performance of different vehicles.

This theme will determine how the rest of your project looks – your questions should all follow this theme, and your website should too.

Question 1 – Understanding and interpreting data [10 marks]

Pose at least 5 (FIVE) questions you would like to ask the data.

Some EXAMPLES of questions are below. These examples demonstrate how questions can be asked of data.

You are required to pose questions which are suitable for/ relevant to the dataset you selected above.

•     Which cryptocurrencies are the most volatile?

•     How does GDP per capita vary across countries in different regions?

Make sure your questions are logical and make sense within the theme you’ve chosen.

An example of a less than ideal question could be “what are the top five songs with the most letters in their name?”, when your theme is a music review blog – there’s no reason for anybody to want to know the answer to that question within that context.

Question 2 – Using Tableau for data analysis [35 marks]

Use TABLEAU to analyse your dataset and answer the FIVE questions you posed in question 1) above.

To complete this task, you must:

•     Use dimensions and measures of your choice, based on your dataset.

•     Use features such as sorting/filtering/aggregating/using calculated fields to create effective visual presentations (charts, tables etc) of your analysis which can be used to answer the questions you posed.

•     Create a Tableau dashboard showing an overview of your analysis, by incorporating your charts, tables etc.

Make sure you’re asking questions that allow for an effective visualisation and use as many of the features described above as possible for each visualisation.

Question 3 – Information presentation and visual design [30 marks]

Create a prototype website using WIX which can be used by site users to

1)     Understand the dataset you selected in question 1) above

2)      Understand the questions you asked of the data in question 1) and your answers to those questions in question 2) above

To complete this task, you must:

•     Consider and apply all aspects of visual design principles according to concepts discussed in the Week 12 – Visual design principles lecture.

•     Embed the output of your tableau analysis as screenshots of the visualisations and add accompanying descriptions.

•     Explain how each visualisation answers its corresponding question.

Question 4 – Visual design [25 marks]

Critique and discuss your website prototype and website design process. To complete this task, you must:

•     Refer to and critique your website according to concepts discussed in the Week 10 – Visual design principles lecture.

•     Support your argument by using at least two external sources.

3.          Submission guidelines

Each group should submit only ONE PDF document (DO NOT submit other documents such as additional tableau workbooks or word documents).

In your submission PDF, the number of sections indicate the question numbers. Please present your answers following the guidelines below:

•     Question 1: List down your FIVE questions

•     Question 2: For each of your questions from question 1, describe how you arrived at your analysis  result.( i.e. what measures and dimensions were used. What tableau features/ functionality were used) Provide your analysis result and interpret your analysis by describing the answer to each question.

Provide screenshots of your analysis to augment your written explanation.

Publish your tableau dashboard in tableau public and provide a link (URL) to your dashboard.

•     Question 3: Publish your website and put the URL together with screenshots of your website in your submission report.

•     Question 4: This is a written assessment task.  You may structure your answer as an essay with clear headings and subheadings. Ensure that your answer addresses the following

•    Provide a comprehensive yet concise discussion of the website design process your group

engaged in, such as identifying the target audience, the information they might be interested in and generating a site map for presenting this information effectively using the various visual  design principles as discussed in the Week 12 – Visual design principles lecture.

•    Demonstrate how your website applies the visual design principles using screenshots and explanations.

Upload your PDF document to Canvas before the deadline published on Canvas. You are advised to keep a record of all intermediate files and working as evidence of your progress.
