Assignment 3: Resolved Design Prototype

Overview

Using Unreal Engine, students will produce a resolved prototype of their game and project review. This includes using and applying interaction and design terminology, considering user testing, affordances and applying techniques of design. Students will present their prototypes as a quick 5-10 minute video, in week 12 seminar. Building on the work you have produced for assignment 2 and the tools and techniques you learnt in assignment 1, it is now time to build your game in Unreal Engine. This scene will be constructed in 3rd person or Ist person mode.

PART A: Work in progress

Students should document in their journal the progress of their assignment 3, including the following:

• 1x playtest reviews based on self-use (completed in seminar in weeks 10 or 11)

• 1x user test review (completed in seminar week 10 or 11)

• Any modifications to assets /scene design with annotations (can be a screenshot with notes) - (different from assignment 2)

PART B: IN-SEMINAR 5-10 MINUTE VIDEO PRESENTATION & REVIEW

You are to step through your assignment review in a pre-prepared 5-10 minute video presentation.

• 1. VIDEO PRESENTATION

• Ensure you address each of the questions below using both audio and visual prompts.

• You should step through your game as a play-test while talking through the following points:

What is happening in the main scene and how does it work?

• Describe and step through the game scene including any interactive components.

1. Menu, HUD, Pause menu, Quit menu

2. Game elements: Winning Condition, lossing condition, resources, challenge level,

What is the hardest part of building the scene in Unreal Engine?

• Explain what components you found difficult to work through in building your game.

• o Did you need to adjust your expectations due to this?

What are the most interesting parts of the scene?

• What components in your game are intended to draw interest from the player and how? According to the users feedback

• What components in building the game did you find most interesting when building/designing and why?

What are the key design elements/principles you have applied within your scene?

• What 2D/3D/interactive/game design elements and principles have been included to aid in the design of the scene?

• How have these changed based on playtesting throughout the prototype build?

How have you redefined the scope of your design?

• What aspects from assignment 2 were left out or significantly changed throughout the building of your game and why?
