M6141 QUALITY ENGINEERING
Project‐based Term Paper: Please read carefully.
o This project‐based term paper will replace part of the conventional Final Examination
which will not be held owing to the Corvid‐19 situation.
o Each student registered for this course is to submit an individual term‐paper on any one
topic from the list given below. (It is possible that a particular topic is chosen by more
than one student; this is permitted but the students’ submissions will be judged
individually).
o Each term paper will be principally judged in terms of 3C’s: correctness, completeness,
and communication (effectiveness in presenting the contents to the reader). The term
paper will account for 70% of the final course grade.
o Note that the content of the term paper is not meant to be limited to what is covered in
class; the student is encourage to survey and explore information as widely as possible
that is relevant to the chosen subject; originality is not a requirement but sources of any
material reproduced or cited in the paper must be acknowledged.
o Each term paper should begin with the official title (chosen from the project list below)
and (important!!) student identification number. The body of the paper is not to exceed
4 single‐sided A4 pages, with computer‐printed text in 12pt font and single spaced.
Non‐text material such as tables, flow charts and diagrams may be inserted as long as
the total space does not exceed the allowed four pages. (List of cited references is
considered part of the main body of the paper). There is, however, no limit (in number
of pages) for appendices.
o All submissions should be in MS Word file, by e mail to: before
11:59pm 24 April 2020 (Friday). No submission beyond this deadline will be
considered.
o An acknowledgement will be sent, latest by 26 April 2020 (Sunday) for each submission
received. Please make an enquiry if you have submitted the term paper but have not
received an acknowledgement by this date.
o Do not send the submission more than once (say, after some amendments). If a student
submits more than once, only the first submission will be considered.
LIST OF PROJECTS FOR THE M6141 TERM PAPER
(Each student is free to choose any ONE)
1. The Role of Management Theory in Quality Engineering
(Focus is on the application aspects of the various major theories)
2. A Comparative Study of Quality Improvement Tools in Manufacturing vs Service
(Illustrative examples are essential in this study)
3. Analytical Techniques in Quality by Design and Strategies for their Adoption in Industry
(Explanations are to be given at a technical level of that of a typical Mechanical
Engineering university graduate)
4. A Comparison of Tools and Objectives in Studies of Process Capability, Control, and
Change
(Realistic examples are important in the explanation)
5. Possible Cultural Aspects of Quality Engineering and Management
(Examples are important; the influence of religions may also be included in the
discussion)
6. Major Success Factors and Possible Obstacles to Successful Quality Engineering Efforts
(Practical examples are important in this study)
7. Application of Systems Analysis in Quality Improvement Activities
(Realistic examples are useful for illustration of points made)
8. Application of Experimental Design to Quality Improvement: A Management Perspective
(The content must be free of academic jargons and be understandable by non‐technical
managers)
9. An Explanation of Potential and Limitations of Taguchi Methods
(Discussions need not be limited to methods beyond what was brought up in class)
10. Application of Robust Design in Quality Assurance in Service Industries
(Note this topic does not deal with product manufacturing)
